Major Medical & Surgical

The Major Medical & Surgical endorsement offers reimbursement for Veterinary treatments (both Medical or Surgical) for accidents, injuries, illness or disease up to a limit, but does NOT reimburse maintenance Veterinary costs. See examples of covered expenses below. This endorsement is NOT available on a stand-alone basis, but can be added to a Full Mortality policy.

What you need to know:

Available for horses 30-days old to 20 years of age, with a Mortality policy

Deductibles are per-issue, meaning you are responsible for the deductible amount for each claim (not each Vet visit) before the policy will respond. Depending on the company, deductibles range from $275 – $500

Most companies also require a copayment percentage on either diagnostics and/or treatment, between 20% – 30%

Claims must be reported immediately, within the policy period   (Available for claims 24/7)

Pre-existing conditions may NOT be covered, whether or not a claim was ever filed. Companies will review a horse’s health history on case-by-case basis to determine the exclusions.

Most (but not all) insurance companies will restrict the Medical limits to the insured value of the horse (for example, a horse insured at a $10,000 value can only have Medical coverage limits up to $10,000) Ask us about your options
